Dr. Rudi H. Ettrich is a higher education leader, scientist, and full professor with more than 20 years of experience in biomedical sciences and academic administration. He currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Larkin University in Miami, Florida, where he also holds a faculty appointment in the College of Biomedical Sciences. In addition, he serves as a community-based adjunct professor in the Department of Cellular Biology and Pharmacology at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University.
Dr. Ettrich completed his undergraduate studies at Eberhard-Karls University in T眉bingen, Germany, and Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He earned his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at Charles University in 2001, specializing in the structural biology of protein complexes. Following a postdoctoral appointment at the Institute of Physical Biology at the University of South Bohemia (2002鈥2003), he joined the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, where he became group leader in the Department of Structure and Function of Proteins and later head of the department.
In 2011, Dr. Ettrich became founding director of the Center for Nanobiology and Structural Biology of the Academy of Sciences in Nov茅 Hrady, South Bohemia, a research campus he helped establish and develop over more than a decade. In 2013, he was appointed Full Professor of Biophysics at the University of South Bohemia. He also founded and directed C4SYS, the Czech national distributed research infrastructure for systems biology, which since 2014 has been included among the priority research infrastructures on the Czech national research roadmap.
Dr. Ettrich鈥檚 research focuses on understanding fundamental biological processes through the integration of theoretical and experimental approaches in structural biology and biophysics. His work investigates the relationship between protein structure and function, dynamic molecular processes, and the interactions of cofactors and subunits within protein complexes. His research has contributed to understanding mechanisms underlying horizontal gene transfer, molecular origins of skeletal deformities, disease-related mutations, ion channel signaling in the immune system, and other molecular targets relevant to human health.
His research has received continuous support from national, European, and international funding agencies since 2001. Dr. Ettrich has authored more than 87 peer-reviewed publications, several book chapters, and numerous conference presentations. His work has been cited more than 2,600 times, and he has an H-index of 31.
Among his honors, Dr. Ettrich received the Otto Wichterle Award in 2006, presented by the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic to exceptionally promising young scientists. In 2010, he was nominated as a Princeton Global Scholar by the Department of Chemistry at Princeton University. In 2016, he was awarded a Senior Fulbright鈥揗asaryk Scholarship and served as a visiting professor at Nova Southeastern University鈥檚 College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he conducted research on skeletal bone deformities related to sulfur metabolism and PAPS-synthase.
Dr. Ettrich鈥檚 career combines scientific research, academic leadership, and institutional development, with a strong commitment to advancing biomedical science and higher education.
